EDMOND, Okla. – Flu season is in full force across the country with dozens of cases being reported right here in Oklahoma.

Doctors said while the vaccine is the best way to prevent the virus this year, it is not a sure thing.

It’s something the Brewer family, from Edmond, found out.

Their little girl, Landry, got very sick the week of Christmas.

Misty Brewer, Landry’s mom, said, “We kept her wrapped up and you could just tell there was really something wrong with her.”

A trip to the doctor revealed it was the flu.

“I was really shocked she had the flu,” Brewer said. “I thought maybe it was strep or bronchitis.”

Guy Peterson, an emergency room resident at Integris Southwest, said, “The very old, the very young and pregnant women, their immune response isn’t as good as everyone else.”

Doctors said this year they are seeing a lot of the flu.

In fact, the Oklahoma State Department of Health’s latest numbers show more than 170 people have been hospitalized with the flu since Sept. 30; two of those patients died.

Doctors at Integris Southwest Medical Center said, in Oklahoma, we could all be at risk even if we had the shot.

“There’s different strains of flu,” Peterson said. “This year, the main strain of flu in Oklahoma is a different strain than we vaccinated for.”

Landry is feeling much better now but doctors said flu season is far from over.

Doctors said even through there is another strain of the flu out there, you should still get the vaccine because, at the very least, it could reduce your symptoms if you do get the virus.

Peterson said, “We will expect to see this for another three months.”

As always, doctors suggest if you are feeling ill and think it might be the flu, go ahead and contact your primary care doctor.

Otherwise, we should all practice good hygiene this time of year by covering those coughs, washing your hands often and staying home if you do feel sick.
